- Flat-front / trucker caps — the flat front panel is ideal for a transfer.
- Beanies — soft and flat when laid out; great for DTF.
- Unstructured (“dad”) caps — flexible crowns conform to a press better than stiff ones.
- Side and back panels — flatter zones on most caps take a small transfer cleanly.
What’s tricky
- Structured, curved, foam-front caps (classic 5-panels) — the curve and seams make a flat transfer wrinkle, bubble, or lift at the edges.
- Large designs on a tight curve — the more curve under the design, the harder it is to lay flat. Keep hat designs small.
- Seams and panel breaks — pressing across a seam leaves gaps in contact and weak spots.
Why odd shapes are hard
A DTF transfer is a flat film. A flat heat press needs even, full contact across the whole design to bond it. On a curved or structured cap, a flat platen only touches the high point, so the edges never get enough heat and pressure — that’s what causes lifting.
